Event Fundraiser Ideas

Event fundraising is a great
way of raising funds, getting the community involved and having fun. It does however
require that your community is close and gets involved when the occasion arises. Use
festive calendar days or events to promote your fundraiser. Have a party, bake sale
or contest based on the event. It's a successful way to blend special events and
product sales into your annual fundraising efforts.
Here are just a few well known special events on the calendar to consider:
- Super Bowl ( February 1, 2004)
- Valentine's Day ( February 14 )
- Mardis Gras ( February 24, 2004 )
- St. Patrick's Day ( March 17 )
- Mother's Day ( May 9th, 2004 )
- Independence Day ( July 4th )
IMPORTANT For Event Fundraising Success
1- Get Advertised / Publicity
MOST important
is that people know about your fundraising event. Be sure to make the message clear:
WHO it's for, WHAT it's for, WHEN, WHERE and HOW much you are trying to raise. Use
local radio station community spots, community paper, school and church newsletters,
local TV, posters and flyers.
2- Get a Central / Well Known Location
Pick a location
that everyone knows by name, just directing to an address will reduce your attendance.
Also pick a location that can handle the requirements of your fundraising event as
well as crowds.
3- Get Trusted Volunteers
Make sure you get the commitment of your
fundraising event volunteers. Your fundraiser will fall short if you can't rely on
your helpers. Have backup volunteers lined up in case of absent helpers. |

$8,000 Ransom Raised To Keep Pastor Away!

In September of 2002, I decided to go on a Mission Trip to Honduras. News spread of my
decision and soon a group of 5 other college students had joined me in my journey.
The trip would not be easy and money was an issue, so we formed an organization within
our parish geared towards college students who wanted to do international missionary work.
We called ourselves "Loving Individuals Giving Hope Through Service" or LIGHTS. We needed
to raise $6,000. We planned a few events such as selling pastries and car washes, but our
main strategy was a gimmick that didn't require products. Our pastor went out of town
for vacation for two weeks, so the 6 of us spoke at each of the Masses saying we were
holding the pastor for a ransom of $6,000 which would be collected the following weekend.
If you didn't want him back you had to pay more! It was so successful that
we raised $8,000! We managed that without selling people anything or "wasting our
time" with tedious projects. Just a simple stroke of creativity!

Animal Bowl

During the Super Bowl, there was another football game of note between the Big Animals
and the Small Animals. The Big Animals were crushing the Small Animals and at half-time,
the coach made a passionate speech to rally the Small Animals.
At the start of the
second half the Big Animals had the ball. The first play, the elephant got stopped
for no gain. The second play, the rhino was stopped for no gain. On third down, the
hippo was thrown for a 5 yard loss. The defense huddled around the coach and he asked
excitedly, "Who stopped the elephant?"
"I did," said the centipede.
"Who stopped the rhino?"
"Uh, that was me too," said the centipede.
"And how about the hippo? Who hit him for a 5 yard loss?"
"Well, that was me as well," said the centipede.
"So where were you during the first half?" demanded the coach.
"Well," said the centipede,
"I was having my ankles taped."
