Thanksgiving: Turkey Trivia

Thanksgiving is a great time for us all to take a break with family and
friends. It allows us to be thankful for the people in our lives and for the simple
things that make life an interesting & exciting experience. Here's a little turkey
trivia for the holidays.
- How did turkey become a part of Thanksgiving?
At the
time the Pilgrims first celebrated Thanksgiving, turkey was a major source of food
for the settlers, so much so that eating turkey on the first Thanksgiving Day was no
treat for the Pilgrims. Turkey meat from wild or domesticated birds was a staple in
the diet of many Indian tribes.
- Do all turkeys gobble?
No, only toms (male turkeys)
gobble. Hens (females) makea clicking noise.
- Why do turkeys gobble?
The gobble is
a seasonal call (Spring and Fall) only the male turkeys (toms) make. Hens are
attracted for mating when a tom gobbles. Wild toms love to gobble when they hear
loud sounds. They also gobble when they settle in for the night. A gobbling turkey
can be heard a mile awayon a still day.
- Can turkeys fly?
Domesticated turkeys
(those raised by turkey farms) cannot fly. Wild turkeys, however, can fly for short
distances at up to 55 miles per hour. Wild turkeys are also fast on the ground, running
at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour.
- Why am I sleepy after eating turkey?
Recent
studies have associated the essential amino acid L-tryptophan, a natural sedative, to
drowsiness. L-tryptophan is used in the brain's production of serotonin, which has a
calming effect and regulates sleep. Although L-tryptophan is naturally occurring in
turkey, a person would have to consume large amounts of turkey on an empty stomach
with no other protein available, for it to cause the sedative effect. The most
likely cause of drowsiness after a big turkey dinner is a high carbohydrate intake.
Since many people eat an unusually large, multi-coursed meal at holiday time, they
often associate the drowsiness they feel afterwards with turkey. The resulting
feeling of lethargy is largely due to the blood rushing from the brain to the stomach
to aid in the task of digesting a huge meal. |

Fundraising: Top 10 Ways To Say Thank You

After a successful fundraising drive, it's important to remember
those who helped get you there.Make it personal if possible.
- Suggest to parents
that they make copies of a handwritten "thank you" note from the student (leaving a
blank to fill in the name of the supporter) acknowledging their support and providing
information on how much money was raised and how the money has or will be spent:
"Thank you [insert name]. Your support of the fall fundraising drive helped Great
Oaks Middle SchoolPTSA raise over $15,000 to use in our computer lab and for new
playground equipment. Erin"
- On form letters to parents acknowledging their
contribution, have someone add a quick, less formal handwritten note: "Thanks for
your continued support!"
- Ask the principal to include in his next broadcast voice
message to parents a quick "thank you" to all those who supported the fall/spring
fundraiser. Be sure he includes an update on how much money was raised and how the
money will be spent.
- In your next newsletter, acknowledge by name all volunteers
and those families who led the fundraising drive in terms of sales AND "sweat
equity."
- Include with every order a copy of the school's calendar of events with
an invitation to attend special community events (carnivals; spaghetti dinners;
auctions; family nights and other informational programs). Consider including a
complimentary pass to ticketed events.
- Consider a small token of appreciation
to your group's hard-working volunteers and/or largest supporters: a pen or pencil
emblazoned with the school logo or a bumper sticker, "I support Great Oaks Elementary
School."
- Take a photograph of fundraising dollars "at work" (students in community
garden; on the playground; or enjoying a special assembly) with a caption that reads:
"Your support of the fall fundraiser made this possible. Thank you!"
- Have donuts
and coffee on hand for those volunteers who rise early and burn the midnight oil
on your group's behalf.
- Set aside a few dollars from each fundraiser to pay for a
small tea or luncheon at the end of the year for all your
hard-working volunteers.
- Publicly recognize volunteers by asking them to stand at
the next group meeting or school assembly OR, better yet, submit their story to the

Thanks To: Mr. Mike Davidson - A Devoted Youth Volunteer

Mr. Mike has been the #1 devoted person to our youth groups. Even though he's
very involved with other groups in the church, he's the only one with perfect
attendance! You can always count on him to be at a youth event, even if it
means he has to take off work for it! He doesn't evenhave any kids in the
group, but he's always there to lend a helping hand. All the kids love Mr.
Mike, mostly because he's like a kid himself, but also because he understands
them like no one else does. He's gone out of his way to see that the groups
are happy and that the leader gets things done so that the kids can benefit.
Since he has a mini-van, he hauls everyone fromplace to place without accepting
any gas money. Mr. Mike has taken money from his own pocket to buy lunches,
ingredients for dinners, decorations for parties, and other assorted things
for the youth, even though there is a bank account set up to take the money
from. He won't accept payment from the kids or the youth leader. He says
it's just another way for him to contribute to the youth groups. All in
all, Mr. Mike deserves a huge reward for being the best adult volunteer for
our youth groups in our church! Thank you, Mr. Mike!!!
